From machines to autonomous driving
The chip industry is at the basis of all developments
Our society is digitizing at a rapid pace. From telephones to electric cars - the chip industry is at the heart of all developments. One of the biggest challenges for a producer of these chips is to maintain market position. This requires knowledge and expertise. We brought in external expertise from Engineero and worked on making the chips faster and more energy efficient.
This technical issue came from an organization that is a service provider within the electronics industry. As a subcontractor of ASML, they produce various machine parts for chip manufacturers. ASML is one of the key players in the chip industry, enabling the race for the fastest chips. However, in order to be able to meet ASML's wishes as a subcontractor, more manpower was needed. This created the need to bring in more expertise through an external party.
“With ASML's machines, companies such as Samsung can make faster chips and provide their mobile with a better battery. It is cool to work on the new generation of chips.” - Elin
Technical issue
The machines that we develop on behalf of ASML ultimately produce energy-efficient chips. These chips are an important driver within various industries and are used for various purposes. From bitcoin mining and flash transactions on the stock exchange, to radar systems in cars that enable the transition to autonomous driving.
For example, the new generation of energy-efficient chips allows cars to quickly communicate with each other via 5G, enabling the integration of ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Support). This allows cars to brake independently and at the right time and prevent accidents. To stay ahead and be a driving force in technological developments, ASML's machines have to be able to do a lot. In order to maintain market position, there was a desire to adapt an existing machine part and add new technology. A complex issue, on the border of what is technically feasible.
Engineering expertise
For this technical issue, Engineero was brought in to add expertise to the subcontractor's engineering team. By bringing external expertise into the project, a team of medior and junior engineers could be put together with which the subcontractor can handle the issue from ASML. Due to a strong focus on knowledge transfer and by organizing the project well, the juniors within the team were able to work well. With the application of industry best practices, the optimizations to the machines and with a good development structure at the base, the subcontractor's team is able to meet ASML's quality requirements.
“What is interesting about this issue is the complexity of the developments within the high-tech electronics sector. As a result, the requirements are often not fixed in advance. That makes it even more challenging.” - Elin
