Engineero made it possible
My name is Divan, in south Africa I was a mechanical design engineer working in the fields of Renewable Energy, Mining and metals, Gas cleaning & Conditioning, Waste Management, Waste-to-Energy and Co-Generation projects.
How did you get in touch with Engineero?
I first came across Engineero through a post on LinkedIn. They were specifically looking for mechanical engineers from South Africa, which caught my attention. Before applying, I reached out to a South African engineer already working at Engineero to learn more about the opportunity. They told me that Engineero was handling many projects and needed skilled engineers, which piqued my interest even more. That’s how I decided to get in touch and eventually started the process with them.
How was the support from Engineero during this whole process?
Engineero’s support during the relocation process was fantastic. They helped with everything, from obtaining our visas to securing housing, which was a big relief since there’s a bit of a housing crisis in the Netherlands. They even picked us up at the airport, provided a lot of practical information about public transportation, and gave us a vehicle to use for the first six months. That really helped us get familiar with the area. They made sure the entire process went smoothly, which was crucial for a seamless transition to a new country.
What's the difference between living in the NL vs. SA?
There are several key differences. The weather is one of the most noticeable—South Africa is generally warm and sunny, while the Netherlands tends to be cloudier and rainier. The culture around food is different too, with people here eating much less meat and enjoying plenty of beer!
In terms of space, South Africa is vast. You can drive for hours without seeing a town, whereas the Netherlands is much more compact, with towns and cities relatively close together. The houses here are also smaller compared to what you might find in South Africa, where space is more abundant.
Wildlife is another stark contrast. South Africa has an abundance of wildlife, from big game to unique birds, whereas the Netherlands is much more urbanized and doesn’t have the same level of biodiversity.
Finally, the work culture is much more balanced in the Netherlands. People tend to stick to their working hours, which helps prevent burnout, and there’s a real emphasis on maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Public transportation is also excellent here, making it easy to get around and travel across Europe.
